Gabriel Altmann, born 1931 in Poltár, Slovakia. Studied Indonesian and Japanese (1953-1958) at the University of Prague, worked eight years as researcher in the Oriental institute of the Academy of sciences in Bratislava, since 1970 until his retirement in 1996 as a professor of mathematical linguistics at the Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany.

Main interests: besides individual disciplines of quantitative linguistics (phonemics, semantics, text analysis, historical processes, script, lexicology, denotative analysis etc.) particularly language laws, theory of language, probability distributions.
